Bits and Bobs

Sad News First:

A woman with Alzheimer's mysteriously disappeared at DFW 7 years ago. It turns out her remains were found recently, and she died of a blow to the head. Yikes.

Tis the Season:

I have joined Martha Stewart's 6-week Christmas workshop. It's free. Each week, you get a new list of crafty ideas and how to make them. This week's theme is handmade gifts.

Wanda Sykes:

She's just awesome.

Late June Tidbits

30

As a 1930s wife, I am Poor

Take the test!

George Carlin has passed away. I've been watching clips of his comedy routines on YouTube and trying not to laugh too loudly at work.

Overly self-righteous dude, James Dobson, is telling anyone who'll listen that Barak Obama is "distorting the Bible." Whatever. I don't see Dobson following the Bible letter for letter. If he was, he'd be sacrificing goats and have a long beard, as well as stoning adulterers and thieves, just as the Bible directs.

UPDATE: Obama to Dobson: Shut up.

Twinkle Toes

Huge shout-out to Booklahver for inviting me to get a pedicure with her yesterday. We sat in big vibrating chairs, our feet soaking in little tubs of blue water lighted by multicolored lights and made bubbly by spa jets. Then a petite gaysian man went to work on my winter-worn feet. (He wore a sweater vest and everything!) Unfortunately it's raining today so my new glossy pink "California Raspberry" nails are hidden inside my sneakers. Damn! (Yes, I'm a prissy robot when it comes to my feet...)

Tonight is the return of two of my favorite television shows, The Office and 30 Rock. I'm trying not to get too excited about it -- I don't want to be let down in case the humor is a bit rusty after all these months off air.

I also want it to be known that Daxie and Lola do share special moments together, like this one I caught on film earlier in the week:You can tell they're not happy about being caught. Secret lovers much?

And finally, our condolences to Dan Savage. He lost his mother recently. Mr Savage, we here at Hermes' Neuticles would like to publicly express our deepest sympathies.

Charlie Heston died

Gun lover, Moses portrayer, and ape hater. These were all roles Heston took on in life and on screen.

Now he's got a permanent seat at the big gun show in the sky. Rest in peace, man.

Breaking: Heath Ledger is dead

What is this? Twenty-somethings die month? Last week, Brad Renfro died. Today, Heath Ledger is found dead in his apartment. How strange and how sad. Both leave children behind.

Short week

Pavarotti has died. He was 71 but it's still sad. He had such a lovely voice. I'm no big opera fan, but I do have a recording of him singing Pagliacci: 'Vesti la giubba'.

Booklahver's kittens are at the house again. We're babysitting while she and her husband are out of town. Lola is not pleased, but we let her outside this morning so she can rest her hissing voice. She'll need it when she comes back in this evening.

For a short week, this one sure is taking its time. I have a class to teach this morning, perhaps that's why.

Oh, and Larry "I am not gay" Craig is now un-resigning.

Jerry Falwell dead at age 73

I guess now Falwell will find out what God really thinks of people who use his name to spread a message of hatred and narrowmindedness.

Time fo' some news

Wiccans finally get approval to have pentacles on their gravestones. Dubya doesn't mind sending them to die in Iraq, but he does mind if they rest in peace under the [peaceful] religious symbol of their choice.

Infant mortality rates in the Southeast, especially the Mississippi Delta, are on the rise. Perhaps the MS state legislature could worry about the health & quality of life of Delta citizens instead of trying to ban abortion? Oh, and NOT cutting Medicaid and CHIP services?

Finally, Boris Yeltsin died. That man sure could cut a rug!

WTF?

A gunman shot 22 people at Virginia Tech this morning. I am so saddened by this.

So it goes...

Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday from complications from a fall. He was 84.

I still remember the first time I read Breakfast of Champions, how eye-opening and funny that book was. It's still a favorite of mine.

How did I miss this?

Jean Baudrillard died last week at age 77. If anyone could make you ponder what the point of reality or life is/was, it was he.

So what do the ladies get?

When nutso suicide bombers of the Muslim persuasion die in the course of violently offing their enemies and innocent bystanders alike, it is well known that said crazies believe they get to go to heaven and frolic with 72 virgins since they martyred themselves for the faith.

So what do female suicide bombers get? A harem of hot guys to fool around with for eternity? Nope. They get to be the boss of the 72 virgins their former husbands in life will be shagging. Huh?!

And people wonder why I have such a hard time giving credit to religion's (any religion's) afterlife stories. What a load of cracked-out crap!

Goodbye Dallas Rose

As you've probably heard, Anna Nicole Smith died yesterday. I heard the news after I woke from another illness-induced nap. I wasn't all that shocked, she was known for controversy; however, it was a rant I heard on The View about Ms. Smith that played back in my head. Rosie O'Donnell and gang were ragging on how they were sick of Anna Nicole and they made fun of her. At the time, I was just flipping channels, ya know? But who knew in a few hours Smith would be dead? Creepy.

Even more creepy? What if the rants broadcast on The View that morning pushed an already depressed Smith over the edge that afternoon? Talk about yer mind bullets...

When it rains, it pours

I've been home all day with flu. I left work early yesterday because I felt like crap. To make a bad situation worse, Emerson collapsed suddenly yesterday when I was unlocking the front door to go in. The vet tried to save him, but he didn't make it. I'm still in shock.

Baby G had Emerson as a pet since he was a tiny kitten. He was the only one in his litter to crawl into her lap and take a nap, so it was love at first sight, ya know?

Molly Ivins

Molly Ivins has passed away. A sad day.

The last time I caught a glimpse of her was when she cut in front of us in line to see Barack Obama speak at the Texas Book Festival. I don't usually let people cut in line, but in Ivins' case, it was an honor.
