The Oscar noms came out this morning. There weren't many surprises, save for the shut-out of The Dark Knight from the best motion picture category. Whah? I have seen all the nominated films, except for The Reader. While I am disappointed that Christopher Nolan's film didn't snag a nom, I hope that that mediocre Benjamin Button doesn't win. Slumdog Millionaire was an exhilarating film, and Frost/Nixon was intriguing; however, I would like to see Milk take home the prize. The film really moved me.
In the end it doesn't really matter. I plan to enjoy myself that evening, eat a little, drink a lot, and have a good time during the show.

TOMMY: Have you... have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior?– Hedwig and the Angry InchHEDWIG: No, but I... I love his work.
TOMMY: No. What he was saving us from was his fucking father. What kind of god creates Adam in his image and then pulls Eve out of him to keep him company? And then tells them not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge? He was so micromanaging. So was Adam. But Eve... Eve just wanted to know shit. She took a bite of the apple, and she found out what was good and what was evil. Then she gave it to Adam, so he would know, because they were in love. And that was good, they now knew. Hedwig... would you give me the apple?

HBO is shooting some movie on campus today. I almost didn't get a parking spot because of this silly mayhem. Apparently Claire Danes is in it; she plays an autistic woman who helps animals or something.
I saw this 12 lb woman outside my window and thought it was Danes for a moment, then realized it was just some other ridiculously skinny person in a 50s outfit.

Same-sex couples are legally marrying in California.
I haven't seen any summer movies yet. No Indy, no Sex & the City, no Ironman. I know. I know.
FDA still isn't sure about who/what/where in the recent salmonella outbreak on tomatoes.
Who will replace beloved Tim Russert at NBC?

10,000 people showed up to the county Democratic convention Saturday. It was a very long day. How long, you ask? I got there around 9am and did not leave until 6pm.
I sat in the stands of the Expo Center most of that time and finished half a novel. I now know how local democracy really works; I've seen it unfold before my eyes in its messy, wonderful, frustrating ways. I can't say I'd do it again (I probably won't get the chance, given the typical banality of presidential elections) but I'm glad I did it. My curiosity is more than slaked.
I went over to Booklahver's later that evening to knock back a few vodkas and watch Meteor, (starring Sean Connery) quite possibly the most boring disaster movie ever made. We mocked the hell out of it.

Can we say "sleep deprivation"? I think I've gotten enough sleep this week, but the time-change has really screwed me over. Eating half of one of Stef's special cupcakes last night didn't help with the drowsiness either. C'est la vie.
SXSW is going on this week. That means this town is crowded with every rock rat and unwashed hipster from every corner of the world. I hear many bands I actually like are in town, but I don't plan on seeing any of them. I instead have been listening to live radio broadcast and my own mp3 player. No crowds, no pushing, no sticky floor. No having to rub up against 30 strangers just to go to the bathroom. No $9 beers.
Speaking of music, did anyone hear that one of my favorite movies, Saved!, has been turned into a musical and will be produced on Broadway? Crazy.

I'm off to see The Golden Compass this afternoon with Baby G. I am quite excited, not only because it is a film version of one of my favorite books (and series) but also because it's considered by some religious groups to be "controversial" because of it's atheist (gasp!) themes. Ooooh. And apparently atheist groups think the movie isn't atheist enough. [Eye-roll.] You can't please anyone any of the time.
I'll post a review later.

Yep, another kitty vid. I'm sorry! I can't help it --- these Japanese kittehs are so cute. They just can't stop playing, well, because one is in the bag, the other is "caught" by the handle. My favorite part? Near the end, the gray cat just wants to stroke the orange one's face...but no! The scrapping must resume!

Well, I will be! New screenshots of the set have been posted online. Too bad we have to wait until March 2009 to see the movie. C'est la vie...guess I have plenty of time to re-read the novel.

I had never heard of Ms Hall before yesterday but now I'm hooked on her hilarious and danceable tunes. My favorite is "Willow Don't Cry," an ode to Willow Offgoode in the movie, Willow. Check out the video. The song actually starts about 2 minutes in.
"My Grandmama Abdul..." Hah!

Check this out --- this ex-cop tells all in an article about how not to get caught with pot. His advice seems pretty logical, but really how many potheads are with-it enough to remember all that stuff? And why do I keep thinking of the opening scene of Super Troopers?

Sally Hansen 10 Day No-Chip nail polish. Not true. My "Certainly Cherry" nails lasted less than 48 hours before the chipping began. No, I wasn't doing yardwork or climbing any rocks. Yes, I used a sealing topcoat. The color is beautiful, but the "10 Day" part is impossible. C+
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Very entertaining. Sure, the book is better, but the movie adaptation took the essence of the story and translated it to film very nicely. B+
VH1's Rock of Love. Atrocious. Base. Trashy. After viewing the premiere episode last night, Baby G has already declared she will not watch the rest of the season. I, however, am still curious. This "reality" show so far is clinging tightly to every convention and device of the genre, but I feel there are at least two women on the show who may not be what we think they are. Yes. I think one of them is a man. The other? I don't know yet. D+

Yahoo movies has a page dedicated to the film. I'm still keen to see it even though they reportedly removed all the religious/philosophical elements of the plot (supposedly to appeal to middle American bores).*
*If you haven't read the trilogy, do! It's a wonderful story and a great critique on religion.

Baby G treated me to a movie last night. We saw Blades of Glory. It's your typical Will Farell comedy vehicle, this time with costumes more outrageous than those he wore in Zoolander. I'd give it a B -- good effort with many laughs.
