18 months, 29 days, 2 hours, 22 minutes
I hope you all had a wonderful 3-day weekend! I watched Jarhead and got mad all over again at our government for the current Iraq war. I enjoyed the film and Mr. Gyllenhaal's beautiful backside, however. But I digress.
Tomorrow is my last day at this job! Europe is playing over and over in my head. That's not good, but knowing I only have one day left in El Officina del Backwards is good. Very very good. I have to choke down a meal at the HolidayInn today, but after that I'm free!
There are things I will miss about this job. I've been here 19 months, after all. It hasn't been completely bad.
- Being able to get to work in 10 minutes.
- An office door to close when I need quiet.
- Surprise visits from Val and Fer.
- Scoring very discounted books at the book store.
- My mentor. She rocks!
Things I probably won't miss are many:
- Paying for parking.
- Dealing with the repercussions of a ridiculous/nonexistent budget.
- My windowless office. I miss the sun.
- The Capn and RTG (who keeps giving me these odd looks of pity and sadness as well as sending me thank you emails for just about everything. Ugh!)
- The shitty staff lounge. (Could it be more uncomfortable?)
- A clueless provost.
- The holiday committee. (Thank The Santa I don't have to put up with that cat-herding assignment again.)
- The no-drink-refills policy in the cafeteria. (WTF?!)
- The tenure-track rat race.
- The senior faculty who have tenure but stopped publishing long ago.
- The computer guy who thinks he's hilarious but he really isn't.
- The "dress code".
- Graduate school.
- Being ignored while another colleague (who started after me) gets the training I should have gotten 18 months ago. (Me? Bitter?)
- The constant construction and renovation which all seemed to take place between the office and the parking lot. I love an obstacle course in the morning.
- The fact that you can't get a decent bubble tea in this city.
Blah blah blah... Hopefully the new job's problems will be of the more manageble variety ("My wallet's too small for my fifties, and my diamond shoes are too tight!"). I do know parking will be free, I'll have a window, I'll actually get the training I need and (get this!) have work to do. My only worry is that I won't get to post here as much. Eh, that's what hi-speed at home is for, right? Heh heh! Have a good week, Gentle Readers!

I think this will be a good new chapter in life. Lunch went fairly well, by the way. RTG sat next to me and kept calling me the "guest of honor". It was sweet the first time he said it, but the 14 times after was a bit much. That fella sure knows overkill.
Be careful with the listmaking. I made a list of co-workers I would not miss. Those are the only ones I run into.
Of all the excellent places to eat in Memphis, the Holiday Inn is where y'all went? And where y'all go all the time? I guess they have great food....I'm just thinking of the succulent BBQ that I would murder my own grandmother for. Did I just say that?
Like the Friends quote...hiliarious!

We go to the H.I. for every special event. It's as though the 38 other restaurants around the office don't exist. The food's okay --- it's buffet so you don't have to wait. On the other hand, it's buffet...
Eh, it was free.
