One more nail in our coffin
What happens when you're in a hurry? You do sloppy work.
What happens when Congress is in a hurry*? Among other things, the Bush Admin gets expanded domestic spying powers.
Great work, Congress. Simply smashing! Enjoy your summer you assholes!
*Um, to go on summer recess, okay? Gosh!

It should be noted though that the recently enacted law will expire in less than six months. At that time, it will not be renewed.
Its passage was cynically political. The democrats felt that if there was a terrorist attack and this law wasn't passed then they'd get it in the next elections.
Talk about not having faith in your own beliefs.
dm, my cynicism is both political and personal. The sunset clause you mention doesn't cover through to November 2008 and instead will be extended or more likely made into permanent law before then. The so-called "opposition" party and the entire legislative branch can think of nothing better to do than give a president with the worst approval ratings of any POTUS that didn't resign even more wiretap and surveillance power than he'd dream of asking for.
There will be no impeachment, and the Bush gang will not be tried for war crimes (certainly not in this country). People say FDR was something to see, but we are witnessing the most encompassing seizure of executive power in American history, in broad daylight and with the consent of Congress. All the best power grabs are naked, after all.
Of course, I will be told yet again I am throwing my vote away in the next election if it's not cast for a Republican or Democrat. What's the goddamn difference? The American experiment is over. Perhaps the next nation-state that gives "democracy" a whirl will actually mean it.
