Leave Owen Wilson Alone!

(Posting this b/c Baby G is a fan of Zoolander) Yes, that was the subject line in an e-mail I received this morning, compliments of Beliefnet. (Beware of pop-up ads.) I hadn't heard of Owen Wilson's internal battle until reading this article. I also hadn't heard of Perezhilton. I doubt the author intended to advertise Perez, but the article made me take a peek at the site. Also regarding the site TMZ: Does it really mean "Thirty Mile Zone" or are TMZ the initials of an infamous blog-queen?

I didn't know TMZ meant 'thirty mile zone'. Is that supposed to be some reference to Hollywood or LA or something?

It is. I looked it up on Wikipedia. The most reliable source on the web.

BTW, there's an ongoing issue at school with undergrads citing Wikipedia in their papers.

The kids here try to use Wikipedia too. I tell them that BECAUSE just anyone can edit it, it's not a "scholarly" source. Mostly they just stare at me.

I've almost had verbal shouting matches with students (and some faculty) about the reasons why you shouldn't use Wikipedia. The students get really defensive, claiming the errors in encyclopedias and their out-datedness (yeah, that's a word). Sure, nothing's perfect...but wikipedia definitely ain't right.

I'm just waiting for someone to cite my blog.
