The New Atheists

The Nation's got an interesting article on what they're calling The New Atheism. No less than five books about atheism, by atheists, have been on the top-seller lists lately. I've read 2 of them. I don't know about an "atheist backlash" against our over-religionized American society really gaining ground, but it's nice to know there are other folks out there who are just as sick and tired of mainstream Christianity bearing down on politics and society as I am.

I think there are more of us (atheists) than we think there are but they are afraid to speak out. Which is sad.

Sometimes I wonder if the "Christian experts" are the ones reading the books. Then they get it on the top seller lists and then people freak out about it.

Hmmm...it's very possible. We live in highly technologically-advanced times. I think you're right, however, about there being more atheists than those that admit it.

I personally haven't "come out" as an atheist, mostly b/c I'm still in that "limbo" of is there, isn't there. It's all good...that's my personal bidness....but agnostic isn't sucha bad moniker...

I think another reason for the "surge" in religious doubt and criticism is the fact that the politicians (and others) who rode to the top on god's proverbial back have all fallen. Not just fallen, but plummeted.

When the leader of the free world says he "fears god" but really is trying to be god, that's plenty enough for people to start to question why this god hasn't stopped the crazy guy who is sullying his name.

The 2004 election showed me that god, wherever he/she is, doesn't give a damn about America.
