What a creep!

Wow. These are not the days to be a Republican. The NYTimes reports that many folks in the GOP knew about Mark Foley's inappropriate emails to a former congressional page but allegedly didn't say anything so they could hang onto his seat this election(!). I think Foley's main opposition in the race, Tim Mahoney (D), said it best:

“It’s now clear from all the reports coming in from across the country that the Republican leadership team has been well aware of this problem with the pages for well over a year,” Mr. Mahoney said at a campaign stop at Palm Beach International Airport. “It looks to me that it was more important to hold onto a seat and to hold onto power than to take care of our children.”
First Tom Delay, then that crazy racist from Virginia, now Foley. Power most certainly does corrupt. It's funny how it only took the Republican party 12 years to get so tangled up in immoral and criminal behavior. It took the Dems almost half a century.

Honestly, though, I just wish the Dems were getting ahead not because of their quickly falling opponents, but because the Dems had a clear message of hope and progress to present to voters. Sure, it's nice to win, but victory is just not as sweet when your opponent gets disqualified for being a dumbass and/or criminal.

Now if only the dems could shake that nasty womanizing reputation that's been hanging around since Gary Hart. Gee, hookers in hot tubs really don't seem so bad by comparison. (Kennedys not included)

Disqualifying dumbasses and criminals would not only greatly reduce the number of people eligible to be in Congress, it would also cause that great unwashed constituency of dumbasses and criminals to 1) claim they are under-represented and 2) more likely to vote for a dumbass and/or criminal as a "reformist".

No, I think we're pretty much stuck with them. It would be something if not every member of Congress was either or both, however.
