Wugga Wugga Wugga

Hi kids. Monday morning here. I didn't sleep much last night. Baby G decided to initiate a delightful conversation about consumerism and postmodern identity around 11:30pm. We had a great discussion, however, it "woke" my brain up. I'm not blaming Baby G for my insomnia, I'm just stating that our insightful discussion about personal purchasing power and the political got my brain juices flowing. I just couldn't sleep very well. Daxie climbing all over me in the middle of the night didn't help either. Little bugger even did that "paw on my mouth" thing. It's cute in principle, but I know where that paw has been.

So I got up early this morning and got to work early, too. Didn't matter --- all the good parking places were already taken b/c school officially starts today. Oy. This town is buzzing. I miss summer.

In other news:
Baby G got a bike! Now we can ride around the neighborhood together. This is good b/c I got my bridesmaid dress on Saturday, and after trying it on last night, realized it wouldn't hurt to lose 5 lbs. Or 15 lbs... Let's just say the plate of chex mix I had prepped for my pre-bedtime snack went back into the box after my "fashion show". Oy. I guess suffocating in strapless brown polyester for an entire evening is motivation enough to drop some weight. That, and the health of my heart, kidneys, and liver.

Eh, who am I kidding? This is all about the superficial. I will look good in non-breathable fabric or die trying.

Hey, it's not made out of polyester...is it? I thought it was satin. It doesn't matter...do you like it at least? I mean, you seemed to like it before....Waaaa....

Yep 100% polyester. The important thing is that it looks like satin. Only the finest from David's. ;-)

Of course I like it --- I picked it out, remember? And Baby G rilly likes it, so I'm good to go. She said she was going to take me to a prom. So sweet.

so what inspired this late night conversation on consumerism, identity, and culture are: (1) the current book i'm reading that i got from good ole' Half Price Books, Introducing Baudrillard (part of the Introducing... series which talks about theorists and various subjects in comic form); and (2) a recent interview of Judith Levine, primarily on her new book, Not Buying It: A Year Without Shopping. i do plan to check this one out of the library one day.

interesting stuff and maybe a subject of a future post? stay tuned, kids.

A clarification on satin:

Satin, according to our pals at Wikipedia, is "a cloth that typically has a glossy surface and a dull back. A satin is a warp-dominated weaving technique that forms a minimum number of interlacings in a fabric. If a fabric is formed with a satin weave using filament fibers such as silk, nylon, or polyester, the corresponding fabric is termed a 'satin'."

So yes, my dress is satin, but a satin made of polyester fibers. Hope that helps clarify the fashion mystery that is formal-wear.

Ah, I see now. Maybe I should look at my dress label...eh, I don't care. Polyester? Stretch Pants? Lime Green Taffeta? It's still clothes. Don't tell Project Runway I said that though..they will ban me from being a viewer. ;)

Dude -- i bet you 70% of the fabrics used on that show are not made from natural fibers! Ya know, they never really say how much money they're allowed to spend on fabrics at Mood. (What a name for a fabric store...) Anyhoo, I have nothing against polyester, it's just that it can be very very warm...

Speaking of polyester dresses, one of my favorite Liz Phair songs is Polyester Bride. It's been stuck in my head for the past few days.
