What?! Little America?

Forgive my cynicism, but I just don't see how an American version of the brilliant show, Little Britain, could work. Even if it is on HBO, I just don't think the hilarious raunchiness will translate well. (Yeah, I'm one of those people who liked the British Office better than the American version.) There's just something about British comedy that you either love or you hate. Guess we'll see how this American experiment goes.

what i find wildly interesting is that 'merican broadcastin' laws are much more strict than british ones--land of the free, baby!

Yes, but apparently British libel & slander laws are much tougher than those of 'Mericuh. So you can make raunchy comedy shows in the UK, you just can't say anything bad about real people, while here on the other side of The Pond, you can't make your show too raunchy, but if you've got a beef with a real person, you can spill it.

hmmm. i don't know which one is better to have! you will have to tell us tv-less fools how the 'mericuhn version is. i am sure it will suck. we are used to raunhcy people in 'mericuh! it won't be as funny as watching trashy brits!

I know --- the British have the stereotype of "properness" that is sooo much fun to, well, make fun of. Americans are not seen as either proper or upper-crust, therefore, making fun of our society's misfits Little Britain-style is, I think, really just going to be a dull exercise in rehashing a bunch of shows we've already seen. (You know, like Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, The Daily Show, Blue Collar TV, The Surreal Life, etc.)

I agree 101% with Tiny Robot. After watching another fab episode of Little Britain last night (when the Fat Chasers or whatever the Weight Watchers parody is named suggested "Jabba" as the name for a chubby couple's child...hiliarious!) I wondered how the American one would work. And I don't think it would. We get enough of the Vicky Pollard-esque on every talk show, why would we want to see a parody? American Deep South sentiment (generalization) makes it so the only gay in the village would be beaten to death on a desolete highway, not hooked up with another gay that was just passing through.
I think the reason The Office was so adaptable is because Americans can identify and escape to a work life more hellish than their own. And it's damn funny for it. I have not watched the British version too much but from what I can tell, it is also hiliarious. The difference: The Office makes fun of office culture, Little America will make fun of American culture. And we already have lots of shows that do that.
