Paging Miss McGillicutty. Paging Miss McGillicutty

Did my first official stint on the ref desk yesterday. It wasn't so bad. I helped a bunch of Froshes find books and I told one kid where the copiers were. It was pretty easy, thankfully. I get to do it again today.

Last night was glass-class night. We got our picture frames that we made last week back -- mine turned out fairly well. The tiny strands of glass (called 'stringer') I had placed on my frame did okay in the firing process, except one decided to make a run for it and ended up sticking out of the frame. A bit odd, but not a major defect. For my 1st frame, I think it turned out pretty damn good. Last night's project was a bowl. We had our choice of square or triangle, I chose square. It's blue and brown stripes of different hues and transparencies, sprinkled with a bit of bronze/gold bits and shards of dichroic glass. I really hope it fuses nicely, as next week, we slump it (put it in the kiln again, this time over a shape to give it a bowl-like structure.) The class is really cool, but glass fusing as a hobby is apprarently quite expensive, so I'm not sure if I'll take it up long term.

Baby G heads out to the wild blue yonder today (a.k.a. visiting the 'rents) and will return in a couple of days. I plan to spend my weekend drinking and making jewelry. I can't wait!

Fortunately, most of the kids who go here are the "overachiever" type, aka, the i play 42 sports, have perfect skin, am prez of all the social organizations (and the math society) and i have a 4.0 average!) kind of kid.

Thank the jesus I don't have to be so involved. I just have to help them find a book or two on Plutarch. Not too tall an order.

Your glass class (rhyming is fun!) sounds really interesting and I can't wait to see the wonders you create.
Don't worry about the ref desk: you will be smoking on it. The hardest questions I have ever got are just ones I don't want to answer because the patron has been weird or we don't have the resources (sometimes, weirdly, they are questions that you would think would be easy to find but I can't find them at all. Go fig.) You can always say "why don't you give me your email address and I can try to find the answer for you when I can devote more time?" or something like this. Translation: get lost. :) I kid, I kid.

Well, seeing as how i have the entire year ahead of me, there will be plenty o' time for the freaks to start winding their way out of the woodwork.

This campus may be picturesque, but I know there are some festering mint-skinned dorkheads out there, waiting to push their glasses up their nose, take a hit off their inhaler, and ask me if we have a copy of the Necronomicon or the latest guide for Warhammer.
