He may have once been a "Bad Muthaf*kah" but now he's just lame
Isaac Hayes recently quit his voice job as South Park's Chef because a recent episode mocked Scientology. Hayes is quoted in The Gaurdian:
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends, and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," Mr Hayes said in a statement. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
A reply from the creators of South Park (also from The Guardian):
"This has nothing to do with intolerance and bigotry and everything to do with the fact that Isaac Hayes is a Scientologist ... In 10 years and more than 150 pisodes Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons and Jews. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show. To bring the civil rights struggle into this is just a non sequitur."
Wow. Isn't it funny how some people claim to be open-minded and even have jobs satirizing our culture, but when it "hits home" so to speak, the party's over? Hayes could have wanted out for all sorts of reasons but chose to use Scientology as his excuse for leaving. Maybe Xenu was crackin' down? Perhaps Tommy got mad that South Park was making fun of him? Perhaps the wacky Scientology cult needed some publicity? Who knows? More importantly, who cares?
Thanks to S. in Chi-town for the news tip.
