Go that way. Fast. If something gets in your way, turn.

I should apply the philosophy mentioned in today's post title to my interactions with Capn Cavem-n (everyone's favorite techno-dolt). Unfortunately since his office is around the corner from mine, I can never see him shuffling towards me until he's in my doorway asking for computer-related help (which has become ridiculously often as of late).

Yesterday, I assisted when a word doc was partially showing on his computer screen. I told him (for the 4th time by my counts) when you can't see everything on your computer screen, simply scroll over or click "view" on the toolbar and select "normal" to change what is displayed. (Ahhh, if only I could select the Capn's mental toolbar and choose "normal" perhaps then I wouldn't be distracted by him ten times a day?)

This morning he stopped by to ask (what else?) how to see an entire word doc on his screen. Honestly, I just stared at him, then realized I was not hallucinating and slowly got up and followed him back to his hole office to tell him yet again to SCROLL OVER! I also told him his "favorites" menu was open on the left side of his screen and if he closed it, he could see the entire document. "Oh," was his surprised reply.

So not only does the Capn not retain any information you give him from one day to the next, he is also blind. This is the problem with the tenure system, Gentle Readers. Complete idiots squeeze their way into a promotion and 20 years later they're just clogging the system with their spaced-out presence. So much for efficiency.

God, I'm so sorry you have to deal with him. And I thought it was bad when library patrons kept asking the same questions...at least they leave.
How do you feel about shutting your door? I know some places look down on it but in this case, I might shut my door to take a "phone call" and then "forget" to open it again. That might save your sanity for half a day. Usually a closed door signals none disturbance.

Wow.

That's super frustrating. I'm sorry that idiots permeate your life...

To lighten the mood, think of Spamarama! Too bad you don't live in Austin (nudge, nudge...)

Thanks for the link!

Lucky for me, I know how to Scroll Over and see the entire link without breaking into a panic and pulling a colleague away from her desk to show me how to see something that's not on the screen. Good times.

Who me? Bitter?

t, it is time to tell this moron that he needs to bother the systems librarian (convince him it is a total computer problem. evil, i know, but you need relief!). let them tell him to go jump in a lake. i know you want to be nice, but tell the loser that you are too busy to help him when he comes around. b's advice on closing the door is a good one. but why hide? just get the idiot to harrass someone else.

Unfortunately shutting my door doesn't help -- he knocks. Also, he doesn't just pull his zoned out / totally anxious act on me. Apparently he used to be in a supervisory position around here and made everyone nuts! It also made him worry soooo much that he asked to be relieved after a few years. (Well, if I spent my day checking on where my subordinates are every 3 minutes, I'd be worn out too.) Needless to say, this behavior didn't get him fired.

Anyhoo...I do plan to talk to my supervisor about Capn because not only can he not do his own work, he's keeping me from doing mine. Capn obviously needs to A) get some basic computer training, and B) be subjected to two hours a day mandatory sunshine time (seriously, the man looks green, a little sun might wake him up).

Annual evaluation time is coming up... I will be sure to mention my repeated time-consuming encounters with Capn and how his many ineptitudes are driving me crazy.

On second thought...maybe I should just start speaking Spanish when he comes to ask me a question?

Yes, its me again always with the practical suggestion. Is your library running Windows XP Professional over a network? Do you have to log in to your computer everyday?

If so, let me know.
