WTF?! Volume nine hundred thirty-eight
Hmmm...it's kinda fishy that a state-run firm from the UAE is now the proud owner of six (6) American ports. Why was a foreign country allowed to take over the operation of 6 major ports here? Please don't think me a xenophobe! I ask about this deal because it bothers me that firm from a country that some of the 9/11 terrorists used as a financial and operational base now controls some major U.S. ports...a prime target of any anti-American terrorist group.
Why did the Bush Administration think the sale of 6 ports to Dubai Ports World (a state-owned business) was a good idea? Fortunately some members of Congress are semi-conscious today and are asking El Prez that very question. Unfortunately, a lot of information surrounding UAE's purchase of the ports and the security measures required by the Bush Administration is (what else?) classified.
Yep, I feel safer already. Damn.

Well, it turns out this COMPLEX situation gets more and more complex by the minute --- it's not just about an Arab company controlling U.S. ports --- it's really about the fact that the Bush Administration has strong financial ties to the global shipping industry AND the Bushies also want to use all the "anti-Arab" sentiment stirred up by this situation to hide the real problem:
That our ports are really no safer after 9/11 now than they were before and that the British company that sold the port control to the UAE company was a FOREIGN-owned company too. Let's face it, only 5% or so of all the millions of containers coming into our ports are inspected. So really, it doesn't appear that it matters WHO owns the ports b/c our government hasn't stepped up security of them in the past 5 years.
Blah.
