That's alright, mama

It's Dead Elvis Week, a.k.a. Tribute Week, here in the Bluff City. Great, like we didn't have enough weirdos walking about before, there will be even more thrown into the mix. And believe me, they're craaaaaaaaaazy. Don't get me wrong, I quite like Elvis; I've toured Graceland twice, and I was tacky enough to take a picture of his final resting place, but I've never worn an Elvis sweatshirt or cried when an impersonator sang Suspicious Minds. If you're interested in kitching-out, you can join the other faithful at Graceland for the candlight vigil or participate in the 5K run, or go to the Dead Elvis Ball on the 13th at the P&H Cafe. Unfortunately, I'm um, renovating, so I can't host anyone during Dead Elvis Week. Maybe next year.

Going to see Elvis movies in the theater at 930am on a Monday? Sweet, certainly more sweet than what I'll be doing at that time, otherwise.

Gus and I went with friends to the 25th anniversary of death back in 2002. I'm sure every year is big, but this one was the cat's pajamas... if your cat likes rain. My word, how it poured the night before they opened the Graceland gates for the mourners to tromp through. It did not a thing to discourage the vigil, though. TR has heard the story of the fellow we stood next to while the color guard marched by; he was from down under somewhere and reported in a lovely accent to his handheld phone that "this was the culmination of a life's patience, finally being here in Memphis, surrounded by so many others that feel deeply the loss of the King, as I do..."

Gus theorized that he was just calling his voice mail and leaving a message, which I wouldn't doubt, but damned if there weren't so many others that felt as he do. I'll bet there were 5000 people standing faithfully in a downpour, right there on the Boulevard.

Deviant sub-cultures are funny.
